Stavros Anthias is well known for taking beautiful photos of Durban and sharing them on Facebook. No, he is not a professional photographer. He is a partner at STBB Durban and a passionate Durbanite who has a knack for finding beauty in Durban landmarks that we often just pass by without taking any notice. He also captures the most stunning sunrises as his son surfs.
He recently shared some photos on his Facebook profile taken on Mahatma Gandhi Road (formerly Point Road) at the Durban Point Precinct. They resulted in an interesting conversation about the history and the future of the Point area and its historic buildings.
One building featured was 172 Mahatma Gandhi Road which has a large Chalupsky Properties To Let sign attached to it. As the board on the building has been there for about 8 years, we are sure it is holding that part of the building up so are reluctant to remove it! This building obviously needs a lot of restoration work done, but it is available to purchase. As Herman Chalupsky says:
"Once the MSC Cruise Terminal and the road works along Point Road are completed, we believe the property will generate a lot more interest from buyers and tenants."
Alison Chadwick of Durban Walking Tours, who has a wealth of knowledge on Durban, shared the following about the building:
This was the former Anchor Hotel designed in 1891 by William Street Wilson and Percy Barr and owned by Mr F L Jonsson (a descendant of Jonsson Workwear) he also owned the Royal Hotel and the Alexandra Hotel (where Smuggler's Inn ended up). Alterations to this hotel were done at a later stage in an Art Deco style.
