Bayhead at a glance
OVERVIEW
South Africa's economy is heavily dependent upon the logistics industry which provides the life line of imported and exported raw materials, finished goods, food, bulk chemicals and fuel. The six major Ports stretching from Saldahna Bay on the West Coast to Richards Bay on the East Coast service the needs of South Africa's economy. However, it is the Port of Durban that is the most strategic and busiest Port in Africa.
Transnet National Port Authority owns the vast majority of the land in South Africa's Ports and Transnet Port Terminals dominates the provision of port services ranging from the handling of cars, iron and manganese ore, coal, containers and agricultural products. In the Port of Durban, the most important service is container handling which is done by Transnet in Bayhead at the Container Terminal.
Bayhead is similar to Maydon Wharf in the sense that all land is leasehold belonging to Transnet. The proximity to the Container Terminal is key and most of the leasehold property is utilised for logistics, cold storage and ship repairs and maintenance.
ACCESSIBILITY AND DISTANCE
Bayhead is accessed via Bayhead Road which joins with South Coast Road and Maydon Wharf Road. There is often a high level of congestion on Bayhead Road due to its link to the Container Terminal. Bayhead has goods rail to and from the area.
NEARBY INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL NODES
Bayhead is adjacent to Clairwood, Umbilio, Maydon Wharf and Island View. These adjoining industrial nodes complement activities in Bayhead and service the Port related logistics industry.
NEARBY AMENITIES
Bayhead is serviced by the neighbourhoods of Grovesnor, Ocean View and Van Riebeeck Park. There are numerous schools including Brighton Beach Senior Primary, Grovesnor Boys High and Bushlands Primary school. The surrounding suburbs also have a golf course, shopping malls and beautiful secluded beaches. There is a nature reserve extending to the harbour mouth that acts as a natural barrier to the weather for Bayhead, but offers walks in pristine coastal bush.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Bayhead is serviced by Metro Rail and buses and taxis. The Metro Rail stations are located at Kingsrest, Flynnlands and Island View.
